"The stage is set for the US to once again be a leader in the development of wireless technology," according to Nobuharu Ono, president and CEO of NTT DoCoMo USA. "It will be interesting to see how fast 3G services take off now in the U.S."
Ono explained that the "better economics" resulting from the mergers would make it more feasible for the three mega-carriers to invest in next-generation networks, and the consolidation has set the stage for 3G and advanced wireless technology to "take off".
This fits with one of our own 2005 predictions that "I am certain that 3G in the US will be the most significant stimulant of business applications for mobile". The USA will drive innovation and development in 3G business applications.
Ono's comments also align with the view, which we thought odd at the time, of Stephen Falk, Vice President of Sprint, who called the US one of the most advanced 3G countries along with Japan and Korea - rather than Europe.
